Practice with 500+ Virginia-specific questions covering the road signs, traffic laws, and safe-driving concepts in the Virginia Driver's Manual.
Virginia DMV’s knowledge exam is two tests in one sitting. The road-sign part has 10 questions, and every one of them must be correct. The general-knowledge part has 30 questions, and at least 24 of those must be correct. Missing a single road-sign item fails the exam even if the general section is perfect. An 80 percent score on a shorter practice set is only a study check. It is not the official passing rule.
The questions are drawn from the Virginia Driver’s Manual. This site’s exam simulator uses the same 10-and-30 split so a practice session has the same shape as the exam. Easy, Medium, and Hard sessions are shorter on purpose: 15, 25, and 35 questions. They are not a second official format. Studying an older 35-question, 80 percent description will not match the exam DMV gives now.
Applicants under 18 must wait 15 days before another knowledge exam. Applicants 18 or older may test once per day. The Driver’s Manual also says the exam may be taken only once per business day. Those two sentences are both in DMV’s materials. Read the current knowledge-exam page before you rely on a same-day retake.
After three failures, DMV requires the classroom portion of a driver training school program. The completion date on that classroom record has to be after the third failure. A driver-improvement clinic is a different course. It does not replace the classroom portion required after three knowledge-exam failures.

This session uses the current official format: 10 road-sign questions, all of which must be correct, and 30 general-knowledge questions, with 24 correct to pass.

Virginia DMV’s knowledge exam page says the exam has two parts. Part one is 10 road-sign questions, and all 10 must be correct. Part two is 30 general-knowledge questions, and 24 must be correct. That is 40 questions. The April 2026 Driver’s Manual says you must answer all ten sign questions correctly before you can take part two, so a missed sign stops the exam before the general questions. Rules from that general section are on the school zone, emergency vehicle, demerit points, and teen driver pages. A license expired more than a year is a different visit, on the license renewal page.
The exam is multiple choice. DMV says the questions come from the Virginia Driver’s Manual. You can take it on a computer at a customer service center or in a classroom at a participating high school. An oral exam is available by request at a customer service center, and it is the same two parts. Phones, copied answers, and outside help are prohibited.
The exam simulator on this page draws 10 road-sign items and 30 general-knowledge items from the study bank. Easy (15), Medium (25), and Hard (35) are shorter mixed sessions. A score on those sessions is a study check. It is not the DMV passing rule, and this site does not publish a pass rate. The written version of the miss limits is how many questions you can miss.
Retakes are on the same DMV page. Under 18, wait 15 days. At 18 or older, one knowledge exam per day. After three failures, complete the classroom portion of a driver training school program and present the certificate, with a completion date after the third failure, before you test again. If you do not get the license or permit within one year of passing, DMV says you retest. The steps after three failures are on the three-failure page. Passing a practice set on this page does not meet a driver-education requirement. From January 1, 2027, a first license at age 18, 19, or 20 needs a learner’s permit held at least 90 days and a state-approved course. The 2027 rule is the statute, and the checker applies it to your dates. A permit issued in the fall of 2026 does not freeze the old choice if the license is issued on or after January 1, which the permit date counts. The online course length is on online driver’s ed for ages 18–20. What to carry to the permit counter is on what to bring to the permit test.
The study bank covers the topics in the Virginia Driver’s Manual. It is not a copy of the DMV exam.
Virginia DMV’s knowledge exam page says the exam has two parts: 10 road-sign questions, and every one must be correct, plus 30 general-knowledge questions, of which 24 must be correct. This site’s exam simulator uses that 10-and-30 split. Easy, Medium, and Hard are shorter practice sessions of 15, 25, and 35 questions.
Virginia DMV uses two lines, not one percentage. All 10 road-sign questions must be correct, and the April 2026 Driver’s Manual says those 10 have to be right before part two starts. At least 24 of the 30 general-knowledge questions must be correct. An 80 percent score on a shorter practice session is only a study benchmark.
Virginia DMV says applicants under 18 must wait 15 days before another knowledge exam. Applicants 18 or older may test once per day. After three failures, DMV requires the classroom portion of a driver training school program, with a completion date after the third failure, before another attempt.

Yes. The exam simulator, the shorter practice sessions, and the topic sets on this site are free to start. No signup is required. The question bank has more than 500 Virginia items. This site is not the Virginia DMV, and a practice score is not a DMV result.
Start with the road signs. Because every sign question on the official exam has to be right, a sign you only half recognize is more expensive than a general rule you can reason through. Use the sign chart and the individual sign pages, then come back to a mixed set. When you miss an item, read the explanation and the manual section it cites before you answer it again.
Missed Questions Review keeps the items you miss and brings them back until you answer them correctly. It is free. On this device the list stays in the browser. A free account saves it with your other progress. The optional $4.99 pass only removes ads. It does not add questions, and a practice score on this site is not a DMV result.
The official sources are the Virginia Driver’s Manual (DMV 39, April 2026 edition) and the DMV knowledge-exam page. Section 1 of the manual covers testing. Section 2 covers signs, signals, and pavement markings. If a sentence on this site and the manual disagree, follow the manual and the DMV page.
