What Happens After You Pass the Virginia Permit Test?
Passing the knowledge exam does not hand you the card at the counter in every case. DMV mails the learner’s permit to the address in its records.
This guide is for study and planning. Virginia DMV’s official pages and the Virginia Driver’s Manual control when a requirement, procedure, or rule applies.
The permit is mailed
After you pass the vision screening and the two-part knowledge exam and DMV accepts your documents, DMV mails the learner’s permit to the address on record. The U.S. Postal Service will not forward learner’s permits. If you are about to move, update the address with DMV before the permit is mailed.
A wrong address on the application is the problem to fix at the visit, not after the envelope comes back. This site does not quote a delivery-day count.
What you can do while you wait
You drive only as the permit allows, once you have it: a licensed supervisor beside you, at least 21, or 18 if they are your legal guardian or sibling, and alert. Under 18, the holding period is at least nine months, with driver education and 45 certified hours including 15 after sunset.
Study after the exam
The knowledge exam is behind you, but the road skills test still uses the same manual. Keep practicing signs and right-of-way while the permit is in the mail, and use supervised drives to match those rules to real intersections.

Frequently asked questions
Will USPS forward a Virginia learner’s permit?
No. DMV says the Postal Service will not forward learner’s permits. The address in DMV’s records has to be the address where you can receive it.
Can I drive as soon as I pass the knowledge exam?
You need the learner’s permit and a qualified supervising driver beside you. Passing the exam is not permission to drive alone.
