Virginia Road Sign Categories

Traffic signs are grouped by purpose, color, and shape. The color and shape tell you the category before you read the words.

Regulatory Signs

Tell drivers what they must or must not do. Red and white colors. Examples: Stop, Yield, Speed Limit, Do Not Enter, One Way.

Warning Signs

Alert drivers to hazards or changes in road conditions ahead. Diamond shape, yellow background. Examples: Curve Ahead, School Zone, Railroad Crossing, Slippery When Wet.

Guide Signs

Provide direction and distance information. Green background on highways. Examples: Exit signs, mile markers, destination signs.

Construction Signs

Orange background, black legend, for a work zone. A posted work-zone speed, with workers present and the penalty on the signs, can mean a fine of not more than $500 under § 46.2-878.1.

Service Signs

Indicate nearby services like gas stations, hospitals, and rest areas. Blue background with white symbols.

School Zone Signs

Pentagon-shaped, yellow-green. Between signs that say school or school crossing, § 46.2-873 sets a maximum of 25 mph while those signs are in position.
